. Political readings and commentary with Sihem Bensedrine. Event jointly organised with the Hamburg Foundation for Victims of Political Persecution and the HanseMerkur insurance group.

At the invitation of President Paul Kagame, Peter Krämer visits the Republic of Rwanda. This trip serves a) to pursue discussions with government representatives about the further development of the African continent; and b) to visit schools that have already been built as part of the “Schools for Africa” campaign.

“Schools for Africa”. Joint visit by Peter Krämer and Heide Simonis (UNICEF) to Huambo (Angola). Using funds from the “Schools for Africa” campaign, 300 schools were built or refurbished in the first half of 2005. 18,000 teachers were also trained.
June 2005
Pupil newspaper competition launched by the German federal president and the federal parliament. In 2005 the Hamburg Society supported the competition with the sum of 15,000 euro, making it the biggest funder.
Schools project in South Sudan. At the request of the associates (see also the meeting of February 2005), the Hamburg Society supports a schools project in South Sudan with a contribution of 12,000 euro. The project is supervised by Hamburg actress Angelika Thomas.

“60th Anniversary of the End of the War – Return to Democracy or Morality?”
Event jointly organised at the city hall by the Hamburg Society and the senate and city council of the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
“60 Years On from Hamburg’s Liberation”
. A survey jointly conducted by the Hamburger Abendblatt (Evening News) and the Hamburg Society on “Hamburg citizens’ view of democracy and awareness of history”. The results are published in, among other places, a special supplement of the Hamburger Abendblatt.
Launch of the national “Schools for Africa” campaign on 20 May at a Berlin press conference attended by Frau Eva Köhler, jointly organised by UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society.

The Hamburg Society, along with many well-known organisations and personalities, signs Amnesty International’s Anti-Torture Declaration.

“Schools for Africa”. International press conference held in Cape Town on 6 December by UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society.

“Schools for Africa”. UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society sign a joint agreement on 19 November to initiate the “Schools for Africa” campaign.

“Quo vadis, Superpower?”
Joint public event in Hamburg with Human Rights Watch to mark the US presidential elections.
The Hamburg Society and Human Rights Watch agree to work in partnership. Over the next five years the Hamburg Society will support the work of Human Rights Watch with donations of 25,000 euro per annum.

At the invitation of the Hamburg Society, 27 relatives and victims of the Madrid bombing of 11 March attend a weekend conference in Hamburg.
